NBC affiliate WCNC Charlotte reports that former local Uber driver, Vicente Diaz-Gomez, is expected to appear in court on Tuesday, April 11, 2023. Diaz-Gomez is charged with second-degree rape following an alleged assault in Matthews that occurred on October 15, 2022. The victim told Matthews police that she was taking an Uber home when Diaz-Gomez sexually assaulted her.
According to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, Diaz-Gomez was arrested and released on October 16, 2022. His originally scheduled court date was in January, but the court postponed the date. April 11 will be Diaz-Gomez’s fist appearance in court following his arrest. Authorities are not sharing if there are more victims.
While Uber has improved safety measures over the past few years, cases such as this illustrate that there is still much work to be done. The sad reality is that sexual predators continue to use the platform to prey on innocent riders. While to police will not say if there are other victims, it is remains possible that Diaz-Gomez has assaulted other women.
