Passaic County Lyft Driver Julio Mejia
Patch.com reports that Julio Mejia, a Lyft driver from Wharton has been found guilty of sexually assaulting an underage girl on September 20, 2023, following a jury trial. The underage girl had been a passenger in his car, and according to Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, Mejia was an active member of the armed services at the time of his arrest.
The victim said Mejia sexually assaulted her after picking her up in Prospect Park on August 30, 2019. The minor victim said that Mejia had continued to interact with her via text messaging for several weeks before sexually assaulting her for a second time. She came forward to police on November 19, 2019.
A jury convicted Mejia of second-degree luring or enticing a child, third-degree endangering the welfare of a child, and fourth degree criminal sexual contact according to Valdes. A sentencing hearing is scheduled on February 9, 2024 before Judge Joseph A. Portelli. Mejia will remain in custody in the Passaic County Jail pending his sentence where he faces more than 25 years in person, life parole supervision under Megan’s Law, and registration as a sex offender.
