On Wednesday, January 8, Amir Attia, an Uber driver in Tustin, CA, was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault. The charges stem from a young woman who had recently been released from Tustin police custody following an alleged DUI crash that occurred in 2018, according to authorities.
In July of 2018, the woman had requested an Uber ride as she was leaving the Tustin police station. She had been taken there after being arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Amir Attia picked her up to drive her to her home in Santa Ana. At one point during the ride, Attia stopped and sexually assaulted the woman.
Investigators matched Attia’s DNA more than a year later, confirming he was the the one who assaulted the woman. Following his arrest, Attia confessed to sexually assaulting the woman. He was booked into an Orange County jail on suspicion of digital penetration and sexual battery.
Attia had a previous conviction for sexual battery from 1993, yet passed Uber’s process for screening drivers.
